Siren #330: Earphone, $675
Our Sawdust Sirens are old style acoustic amplifiers for your new phone's speaker. Simply put your phone in and have a listen.
Legend has it that somebody (nobody knows who, but possibly a Magnavox employee) dropped a telephone earpiece into an Edison Amberola phonograph horn and the sound could be heard a few blocks away. This may have launched Magnavox into the sound amplifying business. Or maybe not.
Magnavox launched in 1915 in Oakland, CA with the invention of the first practical loudspeaker, utilizing a voice coil diaphragm mounted in the base of a gooseneck horn modeled after an early Edison phonograph horn. This Magnavox R3 horn is paired with a base from an ash tree and is about 25.75” tall x 14.25” wide x 13.75” deep. The base is finished with Betty’s Board Butter (beeswax & mineral oil). You may want to re-oil the base occasionally. Each Siren is signed on the bottom of the base.
If your phone has stereo options you may want to play around with mono and stereo settings to see which you prefer.
