Siren #191: Falster

$700.00

This magnificent black goose neck Magnavox Radio Speaker Horn was originally manufactured in Oakland, CA in the 1920’s. It has been updated to amplify your smartphone’s speakers.

Peter Jensen grew up on the Danish island of Falster in the Baltic Sea. In 1902, when he was 16 (and was the first in his village to attend school past the age of 14), his neighbors convinced him to move to the big city: Copenhagen. He found a job as an apprentice in Valdemar Poulsen’s lab, where he taught himself Morse code while working on experiments with Poulsen’s Arc Converter, the first device that could transmit wireless signals. In 1906, Jensen was working in the lab with a friend late at night when he accidentally stumbled upon a configuration that allowed him to hear his friend talking from the shed nearby. This was the first known wireless transmission of human voice. Jensen went on to create the Magnavox company in San Francisco in 1909.

This particular radio speaker horn has a 14.25” bell, stands about 23” tall with its original decal and is paired with a salvaged walnut base with its original hairline cracks. Finished with Betty’s Board Butter (beeswax and mineral oil).
